MCPL is continuing our strategic goal of providing services beyond our walls. Our outreach efforts have led to the establishment of deposit collections for area beauty salons and barbershops; selected Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) senior housing units; and selected offices of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The Deposit Collection @ MCPL design is to have materials for children and adults to read onsite. These collections will be refreshed by MCPL staff approximately every six weeks. This will also afford MCPL staff the opportunity to engage with residents about library services and resources as well as to conduct read-alouds with children.
Our first project under this initiative, Deposit Collection @ MCPL, is in collaboration with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth Council, Montgomery County, Maryland Branch. Deposit collections have been placed in local barbershops and beauty salons so that children can read while they wait. These collections have books appropriate for ages 2 to 12, and are currently in six sites. Teen volunteers from the NAACP Youth Council will check the collections weekly and provide feedback to us.
The collections for the HHS offices will also be geared towards children. The HOC collections will be comprised of materials for adults.
We are excited to bring these collections to the community.
