Friends of the Library, Montgomery County (FOLMC) celebrated its sixth annual Mosaic: Celebrating Diversity through Creative Writing Program with an awards ceremony and reception on May 25.
Each year, students from every public middle school in Montgomery County are invited to participate in this program, submitting entries in the category of essay, poem, or short story, creatively expressing their personal reflections on diversity and culture.
FOLMC honored 25 winning and honorable mention students this year for their achievements. The students received certificates of excellence on behalf of the County Executive and from Councilmember Craig Rice. Mr. Rice gave the keynote address to more than 140 attendees where the students and their families received copies of the published anthology of the students’ work and signed copies of The Prophecy by inspirational author and 2016 Librarians’ Choice winner Ellen Oh. Copies of the anthology are cataloged in MCPL collections and in all middle school media centers.
The year-long program is held in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools and MCPL. The awards ceremony and reception were held in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery County Campus and through generous financial sponsorships from The Sulica Fund and IBM Corporation. Thank you to all of the teachers who helped make this year a success and congratulations to the students. For more information about this program visit the FOLMC website.
