Jan Derry has worked as a Children's LII since 2004. She is currently the LII at the Wheaton Interim Library. Jan is a Maker who spins, weaves, knits, felts, nalbinds and dyes. In the past she has thrown stoneware pottery and built and baked in a mud oven in the backyard; both outgrowths of a past as an historic interpreter and medieval reenactor. Her next project is getting her son married off in June!
Leslie Jarvis is a part time Children's Librarian at the Little Falls branch. She started at MCPL in 1991 after working as an Archives Technician for the Smithsonian Archives. Leslie's favorite activities are reading graphic novels, cycling, and knitting. She is a volunteer for the Washington Revels and spent most of last fall knitting tiny St. Georges and dragons. She loves recommending books to young customers and dancing with all her under-two-year-old groupies at Baby Storytime.
Fran Kaplan is Head of Children's services at Aspen Hill Library. She has worked for MCPL for 39 years. She began her career at the Four Corners Library and then helped open the Long Branch Library in 1977. From there she worked at the Special Needs Library for 14 years and ran the computer room, which housed adaptive technology. She learned how to translate documents into Braille and helped select and introduce customers to software and hardware to help their individual needs. Fran worked at the Olney Library for 10 years as a part-time Children's Librarian and then was promoted to a Librarian II in Children's Service at the Aspen Hill Library, where she has been working for the past 11 years. She has her BA in Spanish and her MLS; she is fluent in Spanish and also has a working knowledge of Sign Language. Fran is married with two adult sons, three dogs and a talking Quaker parrot. When not at the library, Fran enjoys making jewelry, cooking, singing Karaoke, connecting with friends and family on Facebook, traveling and reading.
