Book cover for The Beautiful Things that Heaven BearsWe are excited to have received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read grant in partnership with the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County (FOLMC), Montgomery Community Media, the Gaithersburg Book Festival, and Montgomery History

The NEA Big Read’s goal is to expand our understanding of the world, our communities, and ourselves through the sharing of a good book. The featured book selected by Montgomery County is The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu. This story chronicles the experience of an immigrant in the Montgomery County and Washington metropolitan area.

We have planned a number of Big Read book discussions running from February 28 to June 25. The book is available at your local MCPL branch in print and downloadable formats and for purchase at the FOLMC bookstores.

FOLMC will host a pre-kickoff event on March 22 featuring a panel discussion on the immigrant experience in literature, as well as an authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony May 11.

Bringing this title through the Big Read to Montgomery County provides the opportunity to celebrate the diverse immigrant experiences of many of our residents. Through our programs and events, we will be able to share these experiences which enrich and benefit our County in so many ways.
