On March 24, MCPL will kick off our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative, a fun way to help prepare children for kindergarten. This initiative, based on The 1000 Books Foundation program, is for children from birth until they start kindergarten. Reading to children is a great way to expand their vocabularies and is an opportunity for parents to bond with children, creating lifelong memories. Registration for this program will open March 24.

It’s so easy. Use our online tool, Beanstack, or a printed log provided by your nearest branch. to track each book read, song sung, poem shared, fingerplay done, or any other early literacy moment that encourages family engagement. You can also download the logs from our website. At each level, children receive stickers and have the opportunity to add their names to the library wall in celebration of their accomplishments.

It also supports the County Executive’s policy objective, Children Prepared to Live and Learn, by promoting their education and development in early childhood and broadening out-of-school opportunities.
