...there's still time to participate in MCPL's Summer Read and Learn program? This year's theme is "Libraries Rock." Those from birth to 17 years of age have the opportunity to get involved in fun learning activities and read books of their choice, earning a point for each finished activity or book read. Points can even be earned by attending one of the many great summer programs filled with art, music, storytelling, puppet shows, and science. Participating is easy: Sign up online or in any MCPL branch. Visit a branch to pick up a game board and your minor league baseball ticket. Earn points to complete the program. Visit your branch to pick up your prizes while supplies last.

Are your kids complaining of boredom? Worry not, your local library can help! If you haven’t already signed up, MCPL’s Summer Read and Learn Program is still in full swing. The program runs through September 9th, which means there is plenty of time to sign up and get the kids engaged in reading and activities. Looking to get out of the summer heat? Our libraries are cool and full of exciting, educational programs to entertain you and your family.
Just a few of our upcoming programs are:
- Groovy Nate - He blends music, puppet skits, movement, and comedy into one groovy experience.
- Science in the Summer - Through active, hands-on learning, children will explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space, and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity.
- Video Games at the Symphony - Come join us as Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra presents a family-friendly event that will showcase video game music. There will be a 5-10-minute intro to video game music as a genre, 15-20 minutes for performing, and 20 minutes for an instrument exploration petting zoo.
- Libraries Rock! Dance Party - Put on your best pop star outfit or wear your craziest hair and come join us to dance, dance, dance! We will have photo props, a bubble machine, and a music playlist to keep you moving!
- Under the Sea - Come learn about ocean life and meet a variety of live sea animals. Children will view marine artifacts and learn about ecology, habitat, and conservation during this lively and educational program presented by a marine scientist.
Don’t forget, just by attending one of our programs, you have earned one point towards our Summer Read and Learn program! The program is for children 0-12 and teens 13 -17. Every book read counts as a point, every completed activity counts as a point. Incentives are awarded at 3,6 and 9 points. If you complete 12 points you will have met our bonus challenge and will receive a summer reading medal!
Hope to see you all at the library soon! Happy Summer Reading!
